Off the Beaten Path: A Quieter Side of Mallorca

Blessed with mild temperatures and sunshine throughout the year, Ibiza's next door neighbor Mallorca, Spain needs to be high on your bucket list.

Just 125 miles off the Spanish coastline, lies the largest of the four main Balearic islands, Mallorca. Mallorca is home to the capitol of the islands, Palma, but Mallorca is way more than just its capitol city. From mountain villages with terraced olive groves to rugged coasts lined with small swimming coves, let's get to know a quieter side of Mallorca.

Valldemossa

If you head north out of Palma, through the rugged mountain range Serra de Tramuntana (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), you will follow a winding two-lane road to the tiny town of Valldemossa.

The highest town in Mallorca, Valldemossa perches gracefully on a hilltop, surrounded by terraced olive groves and green shuttered homes steeped in history. Often known for the best selling book 'A Winter in Majorca', which chronicled an eventful winter for Frédéric Chopin and his partner French writer George Sand, the city is also revered as the birthplace of the island’s only saint, Santa Catalina Thomas

Now the town has a growing reputation for its accessibility to hiking in the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, the cobbled streets lined with boutiques and cafes and a vibrant street market every Sunday where you can wander the stalls buying local artisanal goods and sampling Cocas de Potatas, Valldemossa's famous potato biscuit.

But it doesn't end there, here is a list of our 'must do' Travel Key recommendations to add to your itinerary...

  • Book a private olive oil tasting at the agricultural estate of San Moragues. The finca, or country estate, was founded in the 14th century and was once home to Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria. 700 years later, the estate continues the tradition of organic olive oil production from native Mallorquin varieties, bridging economic sustainability with land conservation. After your tasting, cap off a perfect afternoon wandering the estates terraced groves, snapping pictures with the roaming sheep and soaking up the stunning mountain views.

  • Rent a boat for the day to explore picture-perfect Mediterranean beach coves sprinkled along the rocky coastline west of Valldemossa. A boat is the best way to navigate the small inlets where you will be treated to the clearest of crystal blue water and the finest of beaches. Don't forget a reservation at Sa Foradoda, accessible best by boat, for the best paella and end your day at Ca’s Patró March for a perfect sunset view after a swim at Cala de Deià.

  • Spend a day in Sóller. A charming village set in a valley of orange groves where vintage trams still wind through narrow streets dotted with the famous green Mallorcan shutters. Aim for a Saturday and you will be treated to streets filled with market stalls selling everything from warm bunyols (sugarcoated doughnuts) to homemade sobrassada (a raw, cured sausage made with ground pork, paprika, salt and spices). If time allows, jump on the vintage tram for a short ride down to the seaside resort of Port Sóller. Known for its crescent shaped bay and amazing seafood, it's a perfect place to enjoy an evening meal.

When it comes to things to do in Mallorca, the possibilities are endless. An island steeped in history and filled with picturesque villages, secret coves, and rugged mountains. Add on the warm sunshine, a thriving culinary scene, boutique accommodations, and you have your next perfect warm weather getaway.
